The
BEACH
has a number
of cheers and traditions that help support the Canes and make the
BankUnited Center an imposing place for opponents to play in.
BEFORE
TIPOFF:
- The
students come to the arena wearing orange
UM shirts, attempting to
create a sea
of orange as a show of unity and
solidarity.
- Sebastian
the
Ibis leads the basketball
team through the famous white
smoke while the band plays the UM fight song.
- During enemy player intros, the
students
turn around, show their backs to the opposing team, and hold up the U
with their hands.
DURING
THE GAME:
- The entire building
stands for the tipoff and
remains standing until the Hurricanes have scored.
- Sebastian leads the
students in the
famous C-A-N-E-S
spellout.
Hurricane
Frank, the
student in
the hot dog suit, traditionally leads the student section in chants and
cheers. For more information on the original Hurricane Frank and how
the tradition started, click
here. Our current Hurricane Frank is the 3rd
student to wear the hot dog suit (aka "HF Trey").
- On offense,
versions of "LET'S GO CANES," "GO MIAMI GO," and "LET'S GO UM" ring
throughout the arena.
- On defense,
chants of
"DE-FENSE!" and "D-D-D-DE-FENSE" are common, as is the entire student
section yelling "Ohhhhh!" while jumping up and down.
- During our free
throws, hold up one finger. If our player makes
the FT, make a circular motion with your finger while saying, "Whoosh!"
Then go "ohhh!" and jump and stomp once for each free throw
made during that trip to the line.
AFTER
THE GAME:
- After a victory,
chants of "It's Great To Be a
Miami Hurricane!" are frequently heard.
- Students stick
around after the game for the
playing of the Alma Mater
by the band. Hold one finger in the air and rock left and right while singing
the Alma Mater.
Lyrics:
Southern suns and sky blue water,
Smile upon you Alma Mater;
Mistress of this fruitful land,
With all knowledge at your hand,
Always just to honor true,
All our love we pledge to you.
Alma Mater, stand forever
On Biscayne's wondrous shore.
The Canes need
YOU to
be loud and
to help create a true homecourt advantage at the BUC. So come
out to each game wearing
orange
and ready to make some noise!
